Track your car insurance details online in minutes

FinanceLaneby FinanceLane
February 26, 2025

Car insurance is essential for every vehicle owner, ensuring financial protection against unforeseen events. In India, there are several online platforms where you can quickly check the insurance status of any vehicle. The process is not only straightforward but also secure, ensuring that you get accurate information. Explore the steps below that will help you through the various methods available for checking car insurance details using your vehicle’s registration number. Methods for checking car insurance details
There are primarily four ways to check the insurance details of a vehicle using its registration number: the Parivahan Portal, the Insurance Information Bureau (IIB) portal, the mParivahan app, and the state-level RTO websites. 1. Parivahan Portal/VAHAN PortalThe Parivahan Sewa portal, or VAHAN portal, is the official website of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), which provides vehicle-related services.

Steps to check insurance details on the Parivahan Portal:

Step 1: Visit the official website https://parivahan.gov.in or https://vahan.parivahan.gov.in/nrservices/. These websites are operated by the government, ensuring the security of your data.
Step 2: Once on the homepage, look for the ‘Know Your Vehicle Details’ option. This is typically located under the ‘Online Services’ tab.
Step 3: You will be prompted to enter your vehicle’s registration number and a verification code (captcha).
Step 4: After submitting the details, you will be redirected to a page showing details about the car. This includes the vehicle’s insurance status, owner information, vehicle specifications (make, model, year of manufacture), and more. The Parivahan portal is a reliable and easy-to-use platform available across India. It provides a quick way to check the insurance status of any vehicle.

2. Insurance Information Bureau (IIB) Portal
The Insurance Information Bureau (IIB) portal is a central database maintained by the Indian government. It records all vehicle insurance policies in India. You can visit the IIB portal to check your vehicle’s insurance details.

Steps to check insurance details on the IIB portal:
Step 1: Visit the official IIB portal at https://healthapp.iib.gov.in/IIB/Public_Search2.jsp.

Step 2: Once on the portal, you will be required to fill in your personal details, such as name, email address, phone number, and vehicle registration number. This information is used to verify your identity and ensure data security.

Step 3: After entering the required details, click the ‘Submit’ button. The portal will display the insurance policy status, including its validity, policy issuer, and other relevant details.

3. mParivahan App
The mParivahan app, developed by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, is a convenient mobile application that allows you to access a wide range of vehicle-related services, including checking car insurance online details.

Steps to check insurance details on the mParivahan app:
Step 1: Download and install the mParivahan app from Google Play Store or Apple App Store, depending on your device.
Step 2: Once the app is installed, launch it and set the preferred language (English or Hindi).
Step 3: Select the ‘Check Vehicle Status’ option from the main menu.
Step 4: You will be prompted to enter your vehicle registration number. Alternatively, you can use your driving licence number to access vehicle details.
Step 5: Click on the ‘Search’ button. The app will display various details related to your vehicle, including policy type, insurer, insurance validity, coverage details, etc.

The mParivahan app is user-friendly and provides quick access to essential vehicle-related information on your mobile device.

4. State Regional Transport Office (RTO) websites
Each state in India has its own Regional Transport Office (RTO) website, where vehicle registration details are maintained. Many RTOs have an online platform where you can check the insurance status of a vehicle by entering its registration number.

Steps to check insurance details on the State RTO websites:
Step 1: Visit the official website of your state’s RTO. For example, if you live in Maharashtra, visit the Maharashtra RTO website; if you live in Delhi, visit the Delhi RTO website, and so on.
Step 2: Look for the ‘Vehicle Information’ section or ‘Insurance Status.’ The exact naming may vary slightly depending on the state’s website.
Step 3: Enter the vehicle registration number in the required field. Some RTO websites may also ask for additional details, such as the vehicle’s chassis number.
Step 4: After submitting the details, the website will display information about your vehicle, including the insurance status and policy details. This may include the insurer’s name, the type of policy, and the validity period.

The state RTO websites are a reliable source for checking your vehicle’s insurance information, though they may not be as user-friendly as the Parivahan or IIB portals.

Benefits of using online platforms to check car insurance details
Using online portals and apps to check car insurance details comes with several advantages:

  1. Convenience: You can access the information anytime, anywhere, without visiting an office.
  2. Time-saving: Online checking saves time compared to traditional methods, such as manually requesting details from insurance companies or RTOs.
  3. Accuracy: Government-run portals provide accurate and up-to-date information, ensuring you have the latest details.
  4. No Cost: All the platforms mentioned above are free to use.

Checking your third-party or comprehensive car insurance details online is now simpler than ever with platforms such as the Parivahan portal, IIB portal, mParivahan app, and state RTO websites. These resources offer quick, reliable, and accurate information, allowing you to easily verify your insurance status. Just follow the easy steps and ensure your details are up-to-date for smooth renewals or legal purposes.
