Banks will be closed in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Assam, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Manipur, Kerala, West Bengal, Goa, Bihar on May 1, 2025 on account of Labour Day and Maharashtra Day.

Maharashtra Day

Maharashtra Day, also known as Maharashtra Din, commemorates the formation of the state of Maharashtra on May 1, 1960. The state of Maharashtra was established on May 1, 1960, following the Bombay Reorganisation Act of 1960, which separated the Bombay State. This division was founded on the idea of linguistic and cultural unity, resulting in distinct states for Marathi and Gujarati speakers.

Labour day

Labour Day is an annual commemoration of the labour movement and its achievements. It emerged from the labor union movement, notably the eight-hour day movement, which pushed for eight hours of work, eight hours of amusement, and eight hours of relaxation.
It is important to note that bank holidays are declared under the Negotiable Instruments Act, and not all states may observe the same holidays. Customers should also check with their respective banks for local variations.

Why is digital banking important during bank holidays?

Even when branches are closed, digital platforms (mobile apps, internet banking, UPI, etc.) allow users to check balances, transfer funds, pay bills, and more—anytime, anywhere. With UPI, NEFT, IMPS, and RTGS, digital banking enables real-time fund transfers and payments, ensuring you don’t miss out on important financial commitments. From investing in mutual funds to applying for loans and accessing credit card services—most major financial products are now accessible via digital platforms.
