Time to settle pending traffic challan: National Lok Adalat on March 8, 2025 for Delhi Traffic Police challans, know how it works

FinanceLaneby FinanceLane
March 3, 2025

The Delhi State Legal Services Authority in co-ordination with Delhi Traffic Police is organising a National Lok Adalat on March 8, 2025 for settlement of compoundable traffic challans and notices of all types of vehicles (including commercial vehicles) which are shown as pending on Delhi Traffic Police portal till November 30, 2024. Apart from this, you can go to this National Lok Adalat to settle other cases relating to Matrimonial disputes (except divorce), Land acquisition cases, etc.

“I urge the vehicle owners to come forward and settle their pending Delhi Traffic Police challans including spot challans, challans for violation of GRAP norms (pollution fines), notices, etc at the National Lok Adalat which is being held on March 8, 2025 from 10AM to 4PM. The vehicle owners should not miss this opportunity,” says Ajay Chaudhry, Special Commissioner ( Traffic) of Delhi Police to ET Wealth Online.

Details of the cases which can be settled in National Lok Adalat

According to the public notice shared by Delhi Traffic Police, here are the details:
Types of cases that can be settled in National Lok Adalat
There are two broad categories of cases that will be taken into consideration at National Lok Adalat- Traffic police and others, as per public noticeTraffic Police Challans/Notices:

  • All compoundable challans/notices pending till November 30, 2024.

Others

  • Criminal compoundable offences
  • Cheque dishonour cases under Section 138 of Negotiable Instruments Act
  • Money recovery cases
  • Motor Accident Claims cases (MACT)
  • Labour dispute cases
  • Electricity and water bill cases
  • Matrimonial disputes (except divorce)
  • Land acquisition cases
  • Services matters relating to pay allowances and retiral benefits
  • Revenue cases (pending in District courts and High Courts only)
  • Other civil cases

Where is the National Lok Adalat being held?

The National Lok Adalat is being held on March 8, 2025, from 10AM till 4PM at the court complexes of Dwarka, Karkardooma, Patiala House, Rohini, Rouse Avenue, Saket and Tis Hazari.

What to do if you have Delhi Traffic Police challans and notices?

According to the public notice, all the notices/challans are to be downloaded from Delhi Traffic Police website. It is mandatory to carry a printout of the notices/challans. There will not be any facility of print out in the court complexes.
To download and take print out of the notices/challans log on to the Delhi Traffic Police website: https://traffic.delhipolice.gov.in/notice/lokadalat. This link will be activated from March 3, 2025 at 10AM, maximum 60,000 challans/notices shall be downloaded per day till exhausting the overall limit of 1,80,000 challans/notices. To get challans disposed off visit the stated court number in the court complex as mentioned in the printout of the challan/notice at prescribed time slot allotted.

Advocate Sarita Kanwar, Founder and Partner STK Legal, says, “In this Lok Adalat only compoundable offences can be offered for settlement. Non compondable/cognizable cases are heinous in nature and have to be addressed in regular court proceedings.Lok Adalat can only settle matters which are stipulated under legal services authority act.”

Total number of Traffic police notices and challans which can be settled in this Lok Adalat

Only 1000 challans/notices shall be taken up for disposal by each bench in all 180 Lok Adalat Benches. Total 1,80,000 challans/notices shall be disposed off on March 8, 2025 (Saturday), in all above Court Complexes.

Only 7 notices/challans (5 notices, 2 challans) per private vehicle and 2 notices/challans per commercial vehicle will be taken in this Lok Adalat.

It has been learnt that preliminary level discussions are ongoing about increasing the frequency of Lok Adalats. The present problem is that the courts have limited bandwidth and the volume of such traffic challans/notices are too high. This problem could be solved if the frequency of Lok Adalats is increased.
