The Employees’ Provident Fund Organization (EPFO) has streamlined the process of updating the fields related to the profile of the member. The latest revision allows members with Aadhaar-validated Universal Account Numbers (UAN) to update their personal details without the need for uploading documents.

If UAN has already been validated through Aadhaar, EPF members can update their profile like name, date of birth, gender, nationality, father/mother’s name, marital status, spouse name, date of joining and date of leaving themselves without needing to upload any document.
Is employer certification required for such changes?
Earlier, the process for changing these details was quite tedious and time consuming and needed to be channelised through employers. Now, any update would only need the employer’s certification in specific situations if the UAN was issued before October 1, 2017.
Previously, changes required verification from the employer, which caused delays of up to 28 days. Now, 45% of requests can be self-approved by members, and another 50% require only employer approval without the involvement of EPFO.
However, one important thing to note is that members should ensure that their Aadhaar and PAN are linked to their EPF account, as this is mandatory for any updates or withdrawals. Inconsistencies between EPF details and your Aadhaar may delay approvals. Changes may take a few weeks to process, depending on the response times of the employer and EPFO.
What is UAN?
UAN stands for Universal Account Number and it is allotted by the EPFO. The UAN acts as an umbrella for multiple Member Ids allotted to an individual by different establishments.
According to a Press Information Bureau (PIB) release as on January 19, 2025, “At present, around 27% of the grievances filed by the members relate to member profile/KYC issues and with the introduction of the revised JD functionality, it is expected that there shall be drastic reduction in the number of grievances being filed by the members.”

According to the updated process, members whose Universal Account Number (UAN) has already been verified via Aadhaar can update their personal information on the EPFO portal.
