A new era of scientific discovery is on the horizon with the introduction of Doudna, a state-of-the-art supercomputer being constructed at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Named after Nobel laureate and CRISPR pioneer Jennifer Doudna, this next-generation system represents a significant investment in advancing the United States’ position in high-performance computing and AI-driven research, according to NVIDIA.
Unveiling the Doudna System
Set to launch in 2026, the Doudna supercomputer, also known as NERSC-10, is engineered to bolster the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) scientific missions. Powered by Dell infrastructure and NVIDIA’s Vera Rubin architecture, Doudna is poised to outperform its predecessor, Perlmutter, by more than tenfold while using significantly less power. This leap in efficiency is attributed to advancements in chip design and system-level optimizations.
Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA, described the system as a “time machine for science,” capable of compressing years of research into days. This capability will empower over 11,000 researchers to make strides in various fields such as fusion energy, materials science, drug discovery, and astronomy.
