How to pay road tax online in India

When you choose to buy a bike or a car, road tax is included in the final cost of the vehicle or its on-road pricing. If you want to drive your car in a certain area or city, you must pay road tax of that particular state.

What is meant by road tax?

According to the HDFC Ergo website, “While purchasing any vehicle, the buyer needs to pay the base price along with certain other additional charges. These added taxes include the registration charges, the concerned MOTOR INSURANCE costs along with the motor and the road tax. The road tax is that sum of money that is paid while purchasing any vehicle in the concerned country or state. Depending on the state, the tax amount, the clauses, the structure varies.”
In India, both the central and state governments impose a road tax. The state government collects toll taxes, state VAT, passenger and goods taxes, and motor vehicle taxes on an annual or lifetime basis. This tax is different in each state. You must pay road tax to the state government if you want to possess a car there.

  • To calculate road tax in India, you need to consider the following factors:
  • Vehicle type
  • Engine capacity
  • Purpose of usage
  • Age of the vehicle

How to pay road tax in India?

Here is simple steps to pay road tax online, according to the Parivahan website.

Step1: Go to Online Services head in Parivahan website and select Vahan Services or Go to URL https://parivahan.gov.in/vahanservice/vahan/ui/usermgmt/login.xhtml
Step 2: Select Pay Your Tax from Online Services list.
Step 3: Enter Registration Number, Mobile Number and Click on Generate OTP.

Step 4: Enter the OTP received at mobile and Click on Show Details.
Step 5: Crosscheck the details regarding owner information, latest Tax details, Permit Details, Tax Details under Owner Tax Information.
Step 6: Under Tax Details, enter the number of Month/ Year /Quarter (if tax is upto date).
Select Tax Mode from list-

  • Yearly
  • Life time
  • Quarterly
  • Monthly

Step 7: Auto Generated Total payable amount will be indicated, if correct then Click on Payment or Reset if incorrect.
Step 8: Select payment option, make the necessary payment and save the generated Fees Receipt.

What are the documents required in India to pay road taxes?

You might be required to present a few documents at the Regional Transport Office while paying your road tax offline, including:

  • The Registration Certificate of your vehicle
  • The vehicle insurance policy
  • The purchase invoice of your vehicle
  • A copy of your identity proof
  • A copy of your address proof.
