Are banks open on Monday, April 1?

Banks in many states will not be open on Monday as this is when banks will have to close their yearly accounts according to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) guidelines.

Banks will be closed for 14 days in the month of April in different states including Sundays, second and fourth Saturdays, according to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) holiday list.

The Reserve Bank of India has categorised holidays into three categories: Negotiable Instruments Act Holidays, Real Time Gross Settlement Holidays, and Bank Account Closing Holidays.

April 1, 2024 bank holiday

April 1 bank holiday falls under Bank Account Closing Holidays category.To enable banks to close their yearly accounts, banks will remain closed in most of the states except Mizoram, Chandigarh, Sikkim, Bengal, Himachal Pradesh, and Meghalaya.Also read: New credit card rules in April 2024: Changes to credit card rules of SBI Card, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, Yes Bank

These are the holidays for which banks will closed for in April 2024:

Banks to close their yearly accounts, Babu Jagjivan Ram’s Birthday/Jumat-ul-Vida, Gudhi Padwa/Ugadi Festival/Telugu New Year’s Day/Sajibu Nongmapanba (Cheiraoba)/1st Navratra, Ramzan-Id (Id-Ul-Fitr), Bohag Bihu/Cheiraoba/Baisakhi/Biju Festival, Bohag Bihu/Himachal Day, Shree Ram Navami (Chaite Dasain), Garia Puja.

Exchange and deposit of Rs 2,000 notes on April 1

Do keep in mind that RBI has said the exchange and deposit of Rs 2,000 notes cannot be done on Monday. “The facility of exchange / deposit of Rs 2000 banknotes will not be available on Monday, April 01, 2024 at the 19 Issue Offices1 of the Reserve Bank of India due to operations associated with the Annual Closing of Accounts. The facility will resume on Tuesday, April 02, 2024,” RBI said in a notification issues on March 28, 2024.
