Magic of number 9
Also called ‘charm price’, the number 9 has the ability to sell more. So, items with prices ending in 9, say, 19, 99, 29.99, are bought more by customers, according to a study in the Quantitative Marketing and Economics. In fact, in some cases, these even outsell the lower priced items. This is because these numbers offer the illusion of being much lower than the next number, even though the difference is just one.Commas
Removing commas from prices makes these appear less expensive to the brain. So, Rs.1299 would seem to be a lower price than Rs.1,299 and help sell more.
Decoy price
If a retailer offers customers two price choices for an item, say, Rs.25 and Rs.45, shoppers will obviously opt for the former. If, however, the retailer wants to sell at a higher price, he can introduce a third option that is slightly lower than the highest price: Rs.25, Rs.42 and Rs.45. This will make customers more attracted to Rs.45 as they will think it offers more value for just Rs.3 more.
Whole number vs decimal
Items priced using whole numbers appear to customers to be more expensive than the one with decimals whose leading digit is less. So Rs.150 will seem to be much higher than Rs.149.99, and the latter items will be bought more.Number syllables
The items whose prices have fewer syllables will appear to be less expensive than those with more number of syllables even if the latter is less expensive. So, Rs.38.72 with seven syllables will seem more expensive than Rs.40.90 with five syllables to your brain.
