Recently the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) has warned its customers about fraudsters misusing its name to conduct fraud with LIC’s customers. In this regard LIC advised its customers to report such fraud calls which claims to give bonus and others in exchange for money, immediately without any delay. Moreover, LIC also advised its customers to trust only its official Whatsapp number to communicate and cautioned them not to trust any other number, whicch may have been misrepresenting itself to be LIC by using its logo, etc. The official LIC WhatsApp number is- 8976862090 only.

What did LIC say?
According to the public notice published by LIC on February 28, 2025, here’s what LIC said:
- Do not entertain calls, messages or emails from unverified sources.
- Do not be tempted by any exaggerated promises for any monetary benefit and reveal your policy and KYC details or make any payment to any individual name or account
- LIC of India will never call/SMS/WhatsApp/E-mail for verification of KYC.
- Do not share your personal/bank details with fraudsters and beware of phishing E-mails, Links.
- Stay vigilant against online fraud. Safeguard your personal data.
- Register on the customer portal of the official LIC website: www.licindia.in. Download LIC Digital App from Google Play Store/iOS App Store.

“In case you receive such spurious calls, WhatsApp messages or e-mails, please report it to us at spuriouscalls@licindia.com. Please report complaints regarding online financial fraud immediately to the National Cyber Crime Portal at https://cybercrime.gov.in/ or call the helpline in 1930,” said LIC in the public notice.
“LIC’s public notice is a proactive and responsible effort to combat cyber fraud, educating customers with clear, actionable advice while fostering a culture of digital vigilance—setting a strong example for other institutions to follow,” says Sheetal R Bhardwaj, executive member of Association of Certified Financial Crime Specialists (ACFCS).On February 26, 2025 Shriram Life Insurance also issued a similar public notice about how scamsters may send a fraud SMS claiming to get you the insurance policy’s bonus money in exchange for certain fees.“Your life insurance bonus is ready! Confirm your bank details.”- This is a sample of the fraud SMS which bad actors will send. Now when you click on this link, either the fraudster will ask for your bank account details and in the name of penny drop verification will smartly cultivate your debit card or credit card details also. Once the required information is collected, the bad actor will take out as much money as it possibly can.

Do note certain banks limit the amount of money that can be withdrawn from online channels, but this figure is usually kept high like Rs 1 lakh or more, etc. So while your loss will be limited, nonetheless you will suffer a loss if you give away your details like this to a fraudster.
It seems the common link to all of these scam techniques is to induce the phenomenon of greed. The fraudsters seem to be trying to cash in on the fact that you need quick money from existing assets be it insurance policies or pension. Last month PFRDA also issued a similar public notice about fraudsters trying to offer a way out of Tier-I NPS and APY by letting you take out the existing money in exchange for a fee. PFRDA said this is a fraud tactic.
