
When an individual earns a certain amount of money every year, the government requires them to file their income tax return by a defined deadline. If you paid more taxes than you should have, filing your ITR allows you to get a tax refund. It is also a useful form of income verification, which is helpful when applying for visas, loans, or government employment.
Who needs to file income tax return (ITR) in India for FY 2023-24
To file your income tax return online, first time taxpayers should register online. Registering on the e-Filing site allows you to access and use the portal’s numerous capabilities and tax-related services.
Prerequisites for availing this service
- Valid and active PAN
- Valid Mobile Number
- Valid email ID
How to register for E-filing on Income Tax Portal
Step 1: Go to the e-Filing portal homepage (https://www.incometax.gov.in/), click Register.
Step 2: Enter your PAN under Register as a Taxpayer option and click Validate.
In case the PAN is already registered or invalid, an error message is displayed.
Step 3: On the Basic Details page, enter all of the required information, including your name, DOB / DOI, gender (if applicable), and residential status as indicated by your PAN, and then click Continue.
Step 4: Individual taxpayers will see the Contact Details page once their PAN has been authenticated. Enter your Primary Mobile Number, Email ID, and Address. Click Continue.
Step 5: Two separate OTPs are sent to the primary mobile number and email ID mentioned. Enter the separate 6 digit OTPs received on the mobile number and email ID and click Continue.
Note:
- OTP will be valid for 15 minutes only.
- You have 3 attempts to enter the correct OTP.
- The OTP expiry countdown timer on screen tells you when the OTP will expire.
- On clicking Resend OTP, a new OTP will be generated and sent.
Step 6: Edit the details in the page if necessary and click Confirm.
Step 7: On the Set Password page, enter your desired password in both the Set Password and Confirm Password textboxes.
Step 8: Enter your personalized message and click Register.
Step 9: When you are successfully registered, click Proceed to Login to begin the login process.

Log in to the e-Filing portal and update your profile to access all the available services. Now you can file your tax returns and/or access other tax related services.

Step 3 – Enter the required details
Step 4 – Select the mode of Filing
Step 5 – Select the status
Step 6 – Select the appropriate ITR form
Step 7 – If your correct ITR
Step 9 – Summary of tax computation
Step 10 – Proceed to validation
Step 11 – Submit the ITR.
