The RBI raised the repo rate by 50 basis points today to 5.4 percent, returning it to pre-pandemic levels and exiting its accommodative stance. As a result, within the last 93 days, the central bank has increased the repo rate by a total 140 bps (50+90).
Borrowers have been feeling the heat as banks and other lenders have been increasing interest rates on loans since May 2022.
“Recent borrowers who have taken home loans before April would feel the most impact as the rates are expected to rise from 6.5 – 7% to around 8%. For instance, if you have already taken a home loan of Rs 30 lakh at 7% for a tenure of 20 years, your EMI will go from Rs 23259 to Rs 25093, a jump of Rs 1834, if the home loan interest rate climbs from 7% to 8%,” says Pranjal Kamra, CEO, Finology Ventures, a fintech startup.
To mitigate the effect of this rate hike, existing borrowers can use techniques like balance transfer or prepayment options to reduce their loan burden, suggests Kamra.
