As the income tax deadline is nearing, panic among non-filers of tax is common. According to the latest tweet by the income tax department, “Up till July 26th, 2022, more than 3.4 crore ITRs were filed, with around 30 lakh of those filings occurring on that day.
For AY 2022–23, ITRs must be submitted by July 31st, 2022.

A recent LocalCircle report reveals that approximately 41% of respondents are unsure about their ability to follow government regulations. Positively, 59 percent of respondents said they had already submitted their tax returns.
According to the most recent LocalCircles study, 10% of taxpayers have attempted to file their tax returns but have encountered difficulties. The number of people who intend to file their tax returns through the government portal but don’t has increased from 4% in the preceding study to 10%. In addition, 9% of respondents stated they wouldn’t be able to file their ITRs by the deadline, and 13% indicated it would take a lot of work to do so by July 31.
The new survey which asked individual income tax payers, “how are you positioned to be able to file your individual income tax return for FY 2021-22 by the current deadline of July 31st” has revealed that 59% out of 11,081 respondents had filed their ITR, while another 9% indicated that they would be able to do so in the next few days. However, 13% respondents stated that it would require “significant effort” to meet the deadline, 9% admitted that it would be impossible to meet the deadline, which the government has indicated would not be changed. Of those still striving to file their ITR, 10% of respondents complained of “difficulty in filing” but expressed keenness to do so.
Survey Demographics
Over 11,000 responses were received from citizens across 306 districts of India. 69% of the respondents were men while 31% were women. 44% of the citizens were from metros or tier 1 districts, 33% from tier 2 districts and 23% from tier 3, 4 and rural districts. The survey was conducted via LocalCircles platform and all participants are validated citizens who had to be registered with LocalCircles to participate in this survey.
